About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Iowa licenses private investigation, private security, and bail enforcement agencies through the Iowa Department of Public Safety under Iowa Code chapter 80A. A license is not issued until the applicant files a surety bond with the department.

The amount turns on how many license types you hold. An agency licensed for only one of these businesses files a $5,000 bond; an agency that will carry more than one — say private investigation and private security — files a $10,000 bond. This page is the $10,000 (multi-license) version.

The bond is filed for the benefit of the public and stays in force until the surety gives the department 30 days’ written notice. If the agency violates chapter 80A and someone is harmed, they can recover against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.

Iowa Code 80A.10 (DPS · IAC 661 ch. 121)Iowa Code 80A.10 conditions a private investigation, private security, or bail enforcement agency license on a surety bond filed with the Iowa Department of Public Safety — a minimum $5,000 for an agency licensed in only one of those businesses, and $10,000 where the agency holds more than one license. The bond remains in force until the surety gives the department 30 days’ written notice. Administrative rules are at IAC 661, ch. 121.

You need this bond if you're

An Iowa agency holding more than one DPS license — e.g. private investigation and private security
Adding a second license type to an agency that currently files the $5,000 bond
Renewing a multi-license agency whose current bond is expiring
Reinstating an agency license after a prior bond was canceled

Five minutes. The whole thing.

These are the actual issuing fields — no credit check section, because this bond doesn't have one.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is this Iowa agency bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the fixed $10,000 bond amount, the same for every agency. The $10,000 is set by statute, so there is no quote process.
When is it $10,000 vs $5,000? +
A $5,000 bond covers an agency licensed for only one of the three businesses (private investigation, private security, or bail enforcement). A $10,000 bond applies when the agency holds more than one of those licenses. This page is the $10,000 multi-license version.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
How long does the bond stay in force? +
Until the surety gives the Department of Public Safety 30 days’ written notice to terminate future liability. We send renewal notices 60 and 30 days before your term expires so your license never lapses over a missed email.
