About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Iowa Code chapter 80A regulates private investigative agencies, private security agencies, and bail enforcement businesses, all administered by the Department of Public Safety. Under section 80A.10, the department will not issue a license until the applicant files a surety bond — $5,000 for an agency licensed to conduct only one of the three business types, or $10,000 if the agency holds more than one.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Iowa acting through the department (the obligee), with any person injured by a breach of the bond's conditions as the protected party. The statute conditions the bond on the faithful, lawful, and honest conduct of the licensee and its employees, and a person harmed by a breach can bring an action on the bond to recover damages up to the bond amount.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a valid claim, you repay the surety. Under section 80A.10, the bond stays in force until the surety gives the department thirty days' written notice of cancellation, so we track your term and notify you 60 and 30 days before renewal to keep your filing continuous.

Iowa Code § 80A.10Iowa Code section 80A.10 conditions a license on filing a surety bond of $5,000 for an agency licensed to conduct only a bail enforcement business, private security business, or private investigation business — $10,000 if the agency is licensed for more than one. The bond is conditioned on the faithful, lawful, and honest conduct of the applicant and its employees, and remains in force until the surety gives the Department of Public Safety thirty days' written notice of cancellation.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Iowa bail enforcement agency bond? The premium is $100 flat — set by our carrier's rate book for this bond. The $5,000 bond amount is set by Iowa Code 80A.10 for a single-purpose license, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $5,000?No. You pay $100. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond?Licensee bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many applicants finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information, so most applicants approve instantly. If a check ever runs on this bond, it's a soft pull that won't affect your score.
What if my agency is licensed for more than one business type? Then Iowa Code 80A.10 sets your bond at $10,000, not $5,000 — the higher tier applies to an agency licensed to conduct more than one of private investigation, private security, or bail enforcement. Tell us and we issue the correct amount for your license.
