About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Indianapolis licenses wrecking (demolition) contractors in tiers, and Type C carries the $10,000 bond — the smallest tier, for limited demolition work. The bond guarantees you'll perform demolition according to the City's ordinances, protect adjacent property and the public, and correct work the City finds deficient.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Indianapolis (the obligee), with the public and neighboring owners protected. If a wrecking contractor damages property, leaves a hazard, or violates the City's demolition ordinances, a harmed party can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Contractors who demolish safely and to code treat the bond as a license formality, not a risk.

City of Indianapolis — wrecking contractor license (Type C)The City of Indianapolis requires a surety bond as a condition of a wrecking (demolition) contractor license, set in tiers by the City; Type C is the $10,000 level. The amount and the odd-year renewal cycle are set by the City's contractor licensing program. Confirm your tier and current bond amount on your license packet.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Indianapolis Type C wrecking bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the $10,000 Type C bond amount, the same for every contractor. The $10,000 is set by the City, so there is no quote process.
What's the difference between Type A, B, and C? +
The City of Indianapolis sets the wrecking contractor bond in tiers — Type A is $30,000 (the broadest demolition work), Type B is $20,000, and Type C is $10,000 (limited work). Pick the tier your license class requires; we write all three at a flat 3%.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Fixed-amount municipal license bonds like this one don't need one.
How fast will I have the bond? +
License bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many contractors finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
