About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Indianapolis registers general contractors and conditions that registration on a $10,000 surety bond. The bond is a guarantee that you'll perform work according to the City's building and licensing ordinances and correct work the City finds deficient.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Indianapolis (the obligee), with the public protected. If a contractor violates the City's contractor ordinances or leaves permitted work in violation, the City or a harmed party can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Contractors who pull proper permits and finish their work treat the bond as a registration formality, not a risk.

City of Indianapolis — contractor registrationThe City of Indianapolis requires a surety bond as a condition of general contractor registration; the $10,000 amount and the even-year renewal cycle are set by the City's contractor licensing program (administered through Indianapolis–Marion County Business & Neighborhood Services). Confirm the current bond amount and renewal date on your registration packet.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Indianapolis general contractor bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the fixed $10,000 bond amount, the same for every contractor. The $10,000 is set by the City, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Why does the bond renew in even-numbered years? +
Indianapolis ties this bond to a statutory renewal cycle, so it renews on 12/31/2026 or 12/31/2028 depending on the term you choose. We price each term up front and send renewal reminders so your registration never lapses.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount municipal license bonds like this one don't need one.
How fast will I have the bond? +
License bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many contractors finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
