Indianapolis HVAC contractor bonds.
$275. Five minutes.

The City of Indianapolis requires licensed heating & cooling contractors to carry a $5,000 license bond. At 3% that would be $150, so this one lands at our $275 minimum — the smallest premium we charge. It renews on the City's odd-year statutory cycle, and the application is five minutes with no credit check.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Indianapolis licenses heating & cooling contractors and conditions that license on a $5,000 surety bond. The bond guarantees you'll perform mechanical work according to the City's building and licensing ordinances and correct work the City finds deficient.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Indianapolis (the obligee), with the public protected. If an HVAC contractor violates the City's contractor ordinances or abandons permitted work, the City or a harmed party can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Contractors who pull proper permits and finish their work treat the bond as a license formality, not a risk.

City of Indianapolis — HVAC contractor licenseThe City of Indianapolis requires a surety bond as a condition of a heating & cooling (HVAC) contractor license; the $5,000 amount and the odd-year renewal cycle are set by the City's contractor licensing program (administered through Indianapolis–Marion County Business & Neighborhood Services). Confirm the current bond amount and renewal date on your license packet.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Indianapolis HVAC contractor bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. A flat 3% of the $5,000 bond is $150, but $275 is the floor on any bond we write, so that is what you pay. Same number for every HVAC contractor.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Why does the bond renew in odd-numbered years? +
Indianapolis ties this bond to a statutory renewal cycle, so it renews on 12/31/2027 depending on the term you choose. We price each term up front and send renewal reminders so your license never lapses.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount municipal license bonds like this one don't need one.
How fast will I have the bond? +
License bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many contractors finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
