About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Illinois licenses roofing contractors under the Illinois Roofing Industry Licensing Act (225 ILCS 335), administered by IDFPR. Before issuing or renewing a license, the Department requires each applicant to file and maintain a continuous surety bond — $25,000 for an unlimited license (residential, commercial, and industrial roofing) and $10,000 for a limited license.

The bond is continuous in form: it stays in force until the insurance company files a 60-day notice of termination with the Department. Under the Act, a roofing license is cancelled without a hearing on the bond's termination date unless a replacement bond is on file — so keeping the bond active is what keeps your license alive.

The bond stands behind your compliance with the Act and protects parties harmed by violations. It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. We track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out, keeping your $25,000 filing continuous.

225 ILCS 335 (Illinois Roofing Industry Licensing Act)The Illinois Roofing Industry Licensing Act (225 ILCS 335), administered by IDFPR, requires each roofing license applicant or licensee to file and maintain a continuous surety bond — $25,000 for an unlimited license and $10,000 for a limited license. The bond is continuous until the carrier files a 60-day notice of termination, and the license is cancelled on the bond termination date unless a replacement bond is filed. Confirm whether your license is limited or unlimited on your IDFPR application.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Illinois unlimited roofing bond? +
The premium is $750 — a flat 3% of the fixed $25,000 bond amount for an unlimited license. The $25,000 is set by the Roofing Industry Licensing Act, so there is no quote process.
What's the difference between unlimited and limited? +
An unlimited license covers residential, commercial, and industrial roofing and carries a $25,000 bond. A limited license carries a $10,000 bond. This page is the $25,000 unlimited bond — tell us if you need the limited version instead.
Do I pay the $25,000? +
No. You pay $750. The $25,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount contractor bonds like this one don't need one.
What happens if my bond is terminated? +
Under the Act, a carrier can terminate the bond by filing a 60-day notice with IDFPR. Your roofing license is cancelled on the termination date unless a replacement bond is filed first — so if you ever switch sureties, the new bond has to be on file before the old one ends.
