The City of North Chicago requires a $5,000 license bond before it will issue a contractor registration or building permit — the filing goes to the Department of Economic & Community Development. Ours is $100 flat, set by our carrier's rate book for this bond. The bond issues the moment you pay, and the application collects no credit information.

Municipal contractor bonds are about the simplest thing in surety. Here's the whole process:
Business details and an effective date. That's the application — no financials, no credit section, no scavenger hunt.
Contractor license bonds like this issue right after purchase in most cases. At most, 1–2 business days.
Your executed bond and power of attorney arrive by email, ready to file with the Department of Economic & Community Development alongside your registration application. Wet-ink original mailed on request.
North Chicago conditions its contractor registration on a $5,000 surety bond, filed with the Department of Economic & Community Development alongside a certificate of liability insurance and a current license from another jurisdiction or the state. The bond is North Chicago's code-compliance and public-protection guarantee — it stands behind your promise to work to city permit and building requirements while registered.
It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of North Chicago (the obligee), with property owners and the city itself as the protected parties. If your work violates the city's registration terms and a covered loss results, the harmed party can recover against the bond, up to $5,000.
It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Registrations run one year from issuance, and the city will not issue a permit without an active bond on file, so we track the term and send renewal notices ahead of expiration.
These are the actual issuing fields — no credit section, because this application doesn't collect credit information.
