What the bond actually guarantees
Morris Code § 10-173, in the city's Moving Buildings article, requires anyone applying for a permit to move a building over a city street to file a bond in the penal sum of $1,000, with sureties approved by the city.
It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Morris (the obligee), with the city and anyone harmed by the move as protected parties. The bond is conditioned on the mover observing the building code, other city ordinances, and state law relating to the move, and on indemnifying the city against loss it suffers because of the move.
It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The Building & Zoning Office (700 N. Division Street) issues the moving permit once your bond and application are on file.
