About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

A Hawaii private detective or guard agency bond is a client-protection guarantee. The state licenses your agency through the DCCA under HRS chapter 463 and conditions that license on a bond of not less than $5,000.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Hawaii (the obligee), with your clients and the public as the protected parties. The bond stands behind your honest conduct — it backs against fraud, misrepresentation, or impersonating law enforcement while on the job. If you cause harm, the injured party can recover against the bond, and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.

The bond stays in force for one year unless cancelled or claimed against, and the surety may cancel on 30 days' written notice to the Department. The bond must stay active for your license to stay valid — so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out.

HRS ch. 463 (Private Detectives and Guards)Hawaii Revised Statutes chapter 463 governs the licensing of private detectives, guards, and their agencies through the DCCA's Board of Private Detectives and Guards, and requires a surety bond of not less than $5,000, issued by a surety authorized to do business in Hawaii and notarized by both the applicant and the surety. The bond runs one year unless cancelled or claimed against; the surety may cancel on 30 days' written notice.

Five minutes. The whole thing.

These are the actual issuing fields — no credit check section, because this bond doesn't have one. The bond form is notarized by both you and the surety.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Hawaii private detective agency bond? +
The premium is $275 — our flat-3% rate on the $5,000 bond works out to $150, which is below our $275 minimum, so you pay the $275 floor. The not-less-than-$5,000 amount is set by HRS chapter 463.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The DCCA's Board of Private Detectives and Guards, under HRS chapter 463, requires it as a condition of a detective or guard agency license. No active bond, no license.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond runs one year unless cancelled or claimed against. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
