About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

A Georgia insurance counselor is licensed to advise clients on insurance for a fee, and the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire conditions that license on a $5,000 surety bond. The bond is a client-protection guarantee: it stands behind your faithful performance of the services you’re engaged to provide.

It’s a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Georgia (the obligee), with your clients as the protected parties. If a counselor violates the insurance laws or fails to perform contracted services, a harmed client can recover against the bond up to $5,000.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a valid claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay in force for the life of your license; we track it and send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out so it never lapses over a missed email.

O.C.G.A. § 33-23-7 (Commissioner of Insurance)O.C.G.A. § 33-23-7, together with Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. 120-2-3-.18, conditions a Georgia insurance counselor license on a $5,000 surety bond filed with the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire, guaranteeing the counselor faithfully provides contracted services in compliance with the insurance code. The bond runs continuously until canceled, with advance written notice (commonly 60 days) to the Commissioner before any cancellation.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Georgia insurance counselor bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. The bond amount is a fixed $5,000, and 3% of that is $150, below our $275 floor, so $275 is the price for every counselor.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety’s maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How is a counselor different from a broker? +
A counselor is licensed to advise clients on insurance for a fee; a broker places coverage. Georgia bonds them at different amounts — $5,000 for counselors, $2,500 for brokers — both under O.C.G.A. § 33-23-7.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don’t need one.
Where do I file it? +
With the Commissioner of Insurance — in practice, you upload the executed bond to NIPR or Sircon with your license application or renewal. We deliver it ready to upload.
