About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Georgia licenses driver training schools through the Department of Driver Services under O.C.G.A. § 43-13-1 et seq. A school must file a continuous $10,000 surety bond for each location as a condition of licensure, naming DDS as the obligee.

The bond exists for the protection of the contractual rights of students. If a school takes a student’s money and fails to deliver the contracted instruction — or closes mid-course — the harmed student can recover against the bond. By statute, the surety’s aggregate liability never exceeds $10,000 per location.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a student claim, you repay the surety. Each location you operate needs its own bond, written by a company authorized to do business in Georgia.

O.C.G.A. § 43-13-1 et seq.Georgia driver training schools are licensed by the Department of Driver Services under O.C.G.A. Title 43, Chapter 13. The school must furnish a continuous surety bond in the principal sum of $10,000 for each location, for the protection of the contractual rights of students, with the surety’s aggregate liability for all breaches not exceeding $10,000 per location. Confirm the per-location requirement on your DDS application.

You need this bond if you're

Opening a driver training (driving) school and applying for a DDS license
Adding a school location — each location needs its own $10,000 bond
Renewing a driving school license whose bond is expiring or was non-renewed
A commercial / CDL training school that DDS licenses under the same chapter

Five minutes. The whole thing.

These are the actual issuing fields — no credit check section, because this bond doesn't have one.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Georgia driver training school bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the $10,000 bond, the same for every school. The $10,000 is set by statute per location, so there is no quote process.
Do I need a bond for each location? +
Yes. O.C.G.A. § 43-13 requires a $10,000 bond for each school location, with aggregate liability capped at $10,000 per location. Two schools means two bonds.
What does the bond protect? +
The contractual rights of students. If a school fails to deliver the instruction students paid for, or closes mid-course, harmed students can recover against the bond up to $10,000.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the application has no credit section. Fixed $10,000 license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay continuous while your school is licensed. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out with autopay available so your license never lapses over a missed bond.
