About this bond

What the LP gas indemnity bond actually covers

Florida regulates liquefied-petroleum-gas dealers through the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services under Chapter 527, Florida Statutes. A Category I dealer is the broadest class — selling, delivering, installing, or servicing LP gas equipment — and the law requires either liability insurance or, in lieu of it, a surety bond.

When a dealer chooses the bond route, §527.02 calls for a $1,000,000 indemnity bond payable to the Commissioner of Agriculture, with a surety authorized in Florida. It is conditioned on the dealer's compliance with Chapter 527 and the department's rules, and it indemnifies persons who suffer loss or damage from the dealer's failure to comply.

It is not insurance for you. If the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Most dealers carry liability insurance and never touch the bond — but where the bond is the chosen security, we price the amount your application names at 1% of the bond amount, $100 minimum, with a soft credit check that never affects your score.

Ch. 527, F.S. (LP gas; Commissioner of Agriculture)Florida Chapter 527 regulates the sale of liquefied petroleum gas through the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. In lieu of the required liability insurance, a dealer may file a surety bond — for a Category I dealer, in the amount of $1,000,000, payable to the Commissioner of Agriculture, conditioned on compliance with the chapter and department rules. Confirm the exact amount and form on your application; insurance is the more common path, and the bond is the stated alternative.

FAQ

Common questions.

Do I pay the $1,000,000?No. Your premium is 1% of the bond amount, $100 minimum — your exact price appears at the application. The $1,000,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the state and harmed persons; it is not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Is the bond required, or is insurance an option?Chapter 527 requires either liability insurance or a surety bond. Most LP gas dealers carry insurance. The $1,000,000 Category I indemnity bond is the stated alternative when a dealer files a bond in lieu of a policy — confirm which your application calls for.
Who is the bond payable to?The Commissioner of Agriculture. The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services administers LP gas licensing under Chapter 527, and the indemnity bond runs for the benefit of persons harmed by a dealer’s non-compliance.
Is there a credit check?Yes — a quick soft credit check may apply, and it never affects your score. It's used for approval, not pricing — your premium is 1% of the bond amount, $100 minimum, calculated instantly from the amount you enter.
How fast can I have it?A million-dollar indemnity bond is underwritten rather than instant-issued. Most applications get an answer within 48 hours, and the executed bond follows on payment, ready to file with your license application.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
