About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Wyoming licenses Wyoming-based motor vehicle manufacturers through the Department of Transportation, and conditions the license on a $25,000 surety bond filed with the department. The bond is a public-and-consumer-protection guarantee tied to how you conduct the manufacturing business.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier standing behind you, and the State of Wyoming (the obligee). By statute the bond is conditioned that you will not commit fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, and will not violate the federal and state laws and rules governing the business — and it also guarantees the return of your manufacturer license, manufacturer plates, full-use and demo plates, and temporary permits.

It is not insurance for you. If the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Manufacturers who follow the rules and keep good records treat the bond as a license formality, not a risk.

W.S. § 31-16-103 (WYDOT)Under Wyoming Statutes § 31-16-103, an applicant for a license to operate as a dealer or Wyoming-based manufacturer must file with the Department of Transportation a bond of twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) with a corporate surety licensed in Wyoming, approved as to form by the attorney general, conditioned against fraud and against violating the laws governing the business, and guaranteeing return of the license, plates, and temporary permits.

Five minutes. The whole thing.

These are the actual issuing fields — no credit check section, because this bond doesn't have one.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Wyoming vehicle manufacturer bond? +
The premium is $750 — a flat 3% of the fixed $25,000 bond amount, the same for every manufacturer. The $25,000 is set by statute, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $25,000? +
No. You pay $750. The $25,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the state if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The Wyoming Department of Transportation requires it as a condition of a Wyoming-based motor vehicle manufacturer license, under W.S. § 31-16-103. No active bond, no license.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license, and WYDOT requires it with each annual application. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
