$750 flat. Soft pull.

A Wisconsin weight reduction center that collects fees in advance must prove financial responsibility under Wis. Stat. 100.178 — commonly a $25,000 surety bond payable to the state for buyers who don’t receive a refund. Ours is $750 flat, with one soft credit pull.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Wisconsin regulates weight reduction centers under Wis. Stat. 100.177–178, enforced by the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). A center that takes money before delivering services must show proof of financial responsibility — most often a surety bond — so buyers can be refunded if the center fails to deliver.

The security is established in favor of, or payable to, the state for the benefit of any buyer who does not receive a refund. A center can instead use an approved escrow account, but the surety bond is usually the cheapest route: you pay the 3% premium rather than tying up the full amount in cash.

The standard commitment is $25,000. A center that proves it collected less than $50,000 from buyers in the prior calendar year may qualify for a reduced $5,000 commitment — if that’s you, tell us and we’ll issue the lower amount at the flat 3%, $275 minimum.

Wis. Stat. 100.178 (DATCP)Wisconsin Statutes 100.178 requires a weight reduction center to establish proof of financial responsibility — an approved escrow account or a surety bond of not less than $25,000 — established in favor of or payable to the state for the benefit of any buyer who does not receive a refund. A center collecting less than $50,000 from buyers in the prior calendar year may qualify for a reduced $5,000 amount. Confirm which applies to your center.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Wisconsin weight reduction center bond? +
The premium is $750 — a flat 3% of the standard $25,000 bond amount. The $25,000 is the minimum commitment under Wis. Stat. 100.178, so there is no quote process for the standard amount.
Do I pay the $25,000? +
No. You pay $750. The $25,000 is the security’s maximum payout to buyers who don’t receive a refund — it is not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Can my amount be lower than $25,000? +
Possibly. If your center collected less than $50,000 from buyers in the prior calendar year, the statute lets the commitment drop to $5,000. Send us that evidence and we’ll issue the $5,000 bond at the flat 3%, $275 minimum.
Is there a credit check? +
Yes — one soft credit pull, which never affects your score. It informs approval, not price. The rate is a flat 3% either way.
Can I use an escrow account instead? +
Yes — Wis. Stat. 100.178 accepts an approved escrow account in place of a bond. Most centers choose the bond because you pay the 3% premium rather than tying up the full amount in cash.
