About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Wisconsin licenses motorcycle (rider) and driver training schools through WisDOT, and conditions the license on a bond under Wis. Admin. Code Trans 105. The bond is a student-protection guarantee: it lets a customer recover from the surety if the school cannot meet the obligations of its training contract.

It is a three-party arrangement: you (the school, the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Wisconsin together with your students. WisDOT sets the bond amount from the size of the school and points assessed during the prior license period — the $40,000 tier reflects a larger school or more points than the $20,000 tier.

If your WisDOT determination actually places you at $20,000, use that page instead — we carry both. Confirm the amount on your license paperwork before issuing.

Wis. Admin. Code Trans 105Wisconsin motorcycle and driver training schools are licensed by WisDOT and must file a bond (or bond alternative) under Wis. Admin. Code Trans 105. The amount is established by the department from the size of the school and the points assessed during the prior license period; the $40,000 tier reflects a larger school or more points. Confirm your assigned amount on your WisDOT determination.

Five minutes. The whole thing.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Wisconsin motorcycle school bond at this tier? +
The premium is $1,200 — a flat 3% of the $40,000 bond amount. The $40,000 figure is the tier WisDOT assigned, so there is no quote process at this level.
Why is mine $40,000 and not $20,000? +
WisDOT sets the amount from your school’s size and the points assessed in the prior license period. Larger schools or more points land at the higher tier. If your determination shows $20,000, use that page instead.
Do I pay the $40,000? +
No. You pay $1,200. The $40,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the state and your students — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Is there a credit check? +
Yes — one soft credit pull, which never affects your score. It informs approval, not price. The rate is a flat 3% either way.
When does it renew? +
Terms run 1, 2, or 3 years. You'll get renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, and the bond must stay active for your school license to stay valid.
