About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Washington licenses vehicle wreckers — businesses that dismantle vehicles for parts and scrap — through the Department of Licensing under chapter 46.80 RCW. RCW 46.80.070 conditions that license on a $1,000 surety bond, approved as to form by the attorney general.

The bond runs to the state of Washington and is conditioned upon the wrecker conducting the business in conformity with chapter 46.80 RCW. Anyone who suffers loss or damage by reason of a wrecker's fraud, carelessness, neglect, violation of the chapter, or misrepresentation can recover against the bond.

The penal sum is just $1,000 — small, but mandatory — and the premium is $100 flat regardless. If the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety; it is a guarantee to the public, not insurance for you. The bond must stay active for the life of your license; we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Washington vehicle wrecker bond? The premium is $100 flat — set by our carrier's rate book for this bond, not a percentage formula. The $1,000 bond amount is set by RCW 46.80.070, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $1,000?No. You pay $100. The $1,000 is the surety's maximum liability to people harmed by a violation of the wrecker law — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Why is the premium more than the bond is worth annually?Every surety bond carries a minimum cost for underwriting and issuing it, regardless of the penal sum. On a small $1,000 bond that floor is what you see: a flat $100.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information at all. Most applications approve instantly.
When does it renew? The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
