What the fuels tax bond actually covers

Virginia administers the Virginia Fuels Tax Act (Code of Virginia Title 58.1, Chapter 22) through the DMV. An applicant for a license as an aviation consumer must file a bond (or certificate of deposit) with the Commissioner as security for the fuels tax it owes.

Under § 58.1-2211, the bond amount is three times the applicant's average expected monthly tax liability, as determined by the Commissioner — no less than $2,000 and no more than $300,000. The bond stands behind the tax you owe on the fuel you consume.

The bonding company files the Fuels Tax Bond (form FT462) with the DMV; only that form is accepted. Premiums for this bond are 0.75% of your bond amount, $100 minimum — enter the figure on your notice and your exact price appears at the application, and the application collects no credit information at the standard amount.
