About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the charter bond actually guarantees

Tennessee regulates commercial pest control through the Department of Agriculture. A charter authorizes a person, firm, or corporation to do business in commercial pest control, and one is required for each location. The charter is conditioned on a $10,000 surety bond plus a per-year fee and proof of liability insurance.

The bond is a consumer-protection guarantee: it stands behind your proper application of pesticides and compliance with the pest control law. If a firm's wrongful act or omission harms a customer, the harmed party can recover against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.

One important wrinkle. For a new company holding a WDO, GRC, FUM, or BDC license category, Tennessee requires a $50,000 bond for the first three years of business, dropping to $10,000 in the fourth year. The $10,000 bond here is the standard charter amount; if you fall under the higher requirement, send us your category and we'll issue at $50,000.

Tenn. Dept. of Agriculture — Pesticide / Charter rulesTennessee commercial pest control charters are issued by the Department of Agriculture under the Tennessee pesticide law (Tenn. Code Ann. Title 43, Chapter 8) and Department rules; a charter requires a $10,000 surety bond, a per-year fee, and proof of liability insurance ($250,000 per incident / $500,000 aggregate). New firms holding a WDO, GRC, FUM, or BDC license carry a $50,000 bond for the first three years, reducing to $10,000 in year four — confirm your category and amount with the Department.

You need this bond if you're

Starting a commercial pest control firm — applying for a TN charter, one per location
Renewing a charter and your current bond is expiring or non-renewing
Adding a location that requires its own charter and bond
Moving from the $50,000 to the $10,000 amount after your fourth year under a WDO/GRC/FUM/BDC license

Five minutes. The whole thing.

These are the actual issuing fields — no credit check section, because the standard $10,000 charter bond doesn't have one.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Tennessee pest control charter bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the $10,000 charter bond amount, the same for every firm carrying the standard amount.
Why might my bond be $50,000 instead? +
For new companies holding a WDO, GRC, FUM, or BDC license category, Tennessee requires a $50,000 bond for the first three years, dropping to $10,000 in the fourth year. If that applies to you, send us your category and we issue at $50,000 (premium $1,500).
Do I need a bond for each location? +
Yes — a charter is required for each location, and each charter carries its own surety bond. We can issue multiple bonds at once.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on the standard $10,000 charter bond — the application has no credit section. Fixed-amount license bonds at this level don't need one.
What else does the charter require? +
Besides the bond, the Department of Agriculture requires a per-year fee and proof of liability insurance (commonly $250,000 per incident and $500,000 aggregate). The bond is one piece of the charter packet.
