About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Kingsport licenses trade contractors through its Building Division, and conditions a gas installing (mechanical) contractor account on a $10,000 performance bond. It goes in the same packet as your TN state license, business license, and a certificate of insurance naming the City of Kingsport as certificate holder.

The bond is a code-and-performance guarantee: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Kingsport (the obligee). It stands behind your compliance with the city’s gas / mechanical code and the proper performance of your permitted work within city limits.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Contractors who pull permits and work to code treat the bond as an account formality. We track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out so your account stays in good standing.
