About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Tennessee licenses collection agencies through the Collection Service Board, part of the Department of Commerce and Insurance, under the Tennessee Collection Service Act. Licensure is conditioned on a surety bond sized to the agency's certified employee count — $15,000 for one to four employees, $20,000 for five to nine, and $25,000 for ten or more, the tier this bond covers.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Tennessee (the obligee), with consumers and clients the agency serves as the protected parties. If a licensed agency breaches the Act or a client agreement in a way the law covers, a harmed party can make a claim against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay active for the life of your Collection Service license, so we track it and notify you before your renewal date so the $25,000 filing stays continuous.

Tenn. Code Ann. Title 62, Ch. 20Tennessee's Collection Service Act (Tenn. Code Ann. Title 62, Chapter 20) conditions a Collection Service license on a surety bond tiered to certified employee count: $15,000 for one to four employees, $20,000 for five to nine, and $25,000 for ten or more, payable to the State of Tennessee. Confirm your agency's certified employee count with the Collection Service Board — we'll issue whichever tier applies.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Tennessee collection service license bond? The premium is $250 flat — set by our carrier's rate book for this bond, the same for every agency at this tier. The $25,000 bond amount is set by the Collection Service Act for agencies with 10 or more certified employees, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $25,000?No. You pay $250. The $25,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond?License bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many agencies finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information, so most applicants approve instantly. If a check ever runs on this bond, it's a soft pull that won't affect your score.
What if my agency has fewer than 10 employees? Then your bond amount is lower — $20,000 for five to nine certified employees, or $15,000 for one to four. Tennessee tiers the requirement to agency size; confirm your certified employee count with the Collection Service Board before filing.
