About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Brandon licenses building contractors through its Department of Building Services and conditions that license on a $10,000 continuous compliance bond. The bond is a public-protection guarantee: it stands behind the faithful and lawful completion of your work in the city and your compliance with Brandon's contractor license ordinance.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier standing behind you, and the City of Brandon (the obligee), with property owners and the public as the protected parties. If a contractor abandons a project, violates the building code, or breaches the license ordinance, the city or a harmed party can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay continuous for the life of your license and renews annually, so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out to keep your $10,000 filing in force.

Brandon Municipal Code, Chapter 6-2 (Contractor License Provisions)The City of Brandon, South Dakota requires each building contractor to maintain and deliver to the Department of Building Services a continuous $10,000 compliance bond, written by a corporate surety authorized to do business in South Dakota and conditioned on the faithful and lawful completion of work and compliance with the contractor license chapter (Brandon Municipal Code Chapter 6-2). The bond renews annually with the license — confirm the amount on your application.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the City of Brandon contractor bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the fixed $10,000 bond amount, the same for every contractor. The $10,000 is set by the city, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The City of Brandon, South Dakota requires it as a condition of a contractor license, filed with its Department of Building Services under the contractor license provisions in the municipal code (Chapter 6-2). No active bond, no license.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount contractor license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
Brandon requires the bond to stay continuous and renew annually with your license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
