About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the sewage disposal bond covers

Oregon requires a business that installs or pumps on-site sewage disposal systems (septic systems) to be licensed by the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), under ORS 454.695 and the onsite rules in OAR Chapter 340. The license is conditioned on a surety bond.

The penal sum is $15,000 for each installer or installer/pumper license, and $5,000 for a pumper-only license. The bond stands behind your compliance with the on-site sewage disposal standards — if you violate them and DEQ or a harmed party suffers a loss, they can recover against the bond.

DEQ wants the original sealed and signed bond on file, issued to the exact business name you registered with the Secretary of State. We issue the $15,000 installer/pumper bond at a flat 3% with no credit check; if you hold a pumper-only license, tell us and we’ll write the $5,000 version instead.

ORS 454.695 / OAR 340-071-0600 (DEQ Onsite)Under ORS 454.695 and OAR 340-071-0600, a sewage disposal service business licensed by DEQ must file evidence of a surety bond in the penal sum of $15,000 for each installer or installer/pumper license, or $5,000 for each pumper-only license. The original sealed bond must be on file with the DEQ Onsite program in the exact registered business name. Confirm your license type on your DEQ application.

You need this bond if you're

Applying for a DEQ installer license — installing on-site sewage disposal (septic) systems
Holding an installer/pumper license that DEQ conditions on the $15,000 bond
Renewing your sewage disposal license and your current bond is expiring or non-renewing
A pumper-only business — you need the smaller $5,000 version; tell us and we’ll switch it

Five minutes. The whole thing.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Oregon sewage disposal bond? +
The premium is $450 — a flat 3% of the $15,000 installer/pumper bond amount, the same for everyone at this tier. A pumper-only license needs a smaller $5,000 bond, which lands at our $275 minimum.
Which license needs $15,000 vs. $5,000? +
The $15,000 bond applies to each installer or installer/pumper license; the $5,000 bond applies to a pumper-only license, under ORS 454.695 and OAR 340-071-0600. Tell us your license type and we’ll write the right one.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. The $15,000 sewage disposal bond issues without a credit pull.
Who requires it and where do I file it? +
The Oregon DEQ Onsite program requires it as a condition of your license. DEQ wants the original sealed and signed bond on file, issued to your exact registered business name — we mail the original and email your copy.
When does it renew? +
Terms run 1, 2, or 3 years. The bond must stay on file with DEQ for your license to stay valid; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available.
