About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

A major street works contractor bond is a compliance-and-restoration guarantee at a larger scale. When you do substantial street and right-of-way work in Stillwater, the City wants a financial backstop that you build and restore to City standards and follow its construction requirements.

It is a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier standing behind you, and the City of Stillwater (the obligee), with the public as the protected party. If you leave defective work or damage public property and don't make it right, the City can recover against the $100,000 bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Contractors who build and restore to City standards treat the bond as a license formality, not a risk.

City of Stillwater — Street Works / Right-of-WayThe City of Stillwater requires a $100,000 surety bond as a condition of licensing a major street works contractor; the $100,000 amount and the bond terms are set by the City of Stillwater. We have not reproduced a specific ordinance number here — confirm the requirement with the City or send it to us and we will match it.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Stillwater major street works bond? +
The premium is $3,000 — a flat 3% of the fixed $100,000 bond amount, the same for every contractor. The $100,000 is set by the City, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $100,000? +
No. You pay $3,000. The $100,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the City if a valid claim is made — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
What's the difference between major and minor street works? +
The City of Stillwater scales the bond to the scope of right-of-way work. Major street works is this $100,000 / $3,000 bond; minor street works is a separate $10,000 bond. Check your license application for which class the City assigned you.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your score.
When does it renew? +
You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
