About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Plumbing in much of Franklin County is regulated by Franklin County Public Health, which administers the local plumbing program and registers the contractors who do the work. As a condition of registration, it requires a $5,000 surety bond.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier standing behind you, and Franklin County Public Health (the obligee). The bond guarantees that you install and repair plumbing in accordance with the county's plumbing rules and the Ohio plumbing code.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim on non-compliant work, you repay the surety. The City of Columbus runs its own separate contractor registration; if you work both, you may carry the Columbus bond as well, and we track each so neither lapses.

Franklin County Public Health — plumbing registrationFranklin County Public Health requires this $5,000 surety bond as a condition of registering as a plumbing contractor in its jurisdiction; the bond amount and terms are set by the health district. The City of Columbus maintains its own separate contractor registration and bond. Confirm the current amount on your registration packet — the penal sum on this page reflects the bond as listed.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Franklin County plumbing bond? +
The premium is $275. A flat 3% of the $5,000 bond amount is $150, but our minimum premium on any bond is $275 — so $275 is the price, the same for every plumber.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Is this the same as the Columbus contractor bond? +
No. This bond is filed with Franklin County Public Health for plumbing registration, while the City of Columbus runs a separate $25,000 contractor registration. A contractor working both may need both.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount registration bonds like this one don't need one.
How fast will I have the bond? +
Bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many plumbers finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
