Franklin County Public Health requires a $5,000 surety bond to register as a plumbing contractor in the county. At a flat 3% that math is $150 — but our minimum premium is $275, so $275 is the price, the same for every plumber.

Registration bonds are the simplest thing in surety. Here's the entire process:
Business details and an effective date. That's the application — no financials, no credit check section.
Small fixed-amount bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase. At most, 1–2 business days.
Your executed bond and power of attorney arrive by email, ready to file with your Franklin County Public Health plumbing registration. Wet-ink original mailed on request.
$5,000 bond × 3% = $150, but our minimum premium is $275 — so $275 per term. Fixed amount, fixed price, multi-year if you want it.
Plumbing in much of Franklin County is regulated by Franklin County Public Health, which administers the local plumbing program and registers the contractors who do the work. As a condition of registration, it requires a $5,000 surety bond.
It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier standing behind you, and Franklin County Public Health (the obligee). The bond guarantees that you install and repair plumbing in accordance with the county's plumbing rules and the Ohio plumbing code.
It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim on non-compliant work, you repay the surety. The City of Columbus runs its own separate contractor registration; if you work both, you may carry the Columbus bond as well, and we track each so neither lapses.
These are the actual issuing fields — no credit check section, because this bond doesn't have one.
