About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Fairfield licenses water and sewer service contractors through its Utilities Department, and conditions that license on a $25,000 performance and maintenance bond. The bond guarantees that your service work on the city's water and sewer system is done to spec and stays sound through the maintenance period.

It is a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Fairfield (the obligee). If your tap, connection, or service work fails or is left defective and you do not correct it, the city can recover against the bond to make repairs.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays the city, you repay the surety. Contractors who do clean work and stand behind it through the maintenance term treat the bond as a license formality, not a risk. We track the 12/31 renewal and notify you 60 and 30 days out.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

Do I pay the $25,000? +
No. You pay $750 — the flat 3% of the bond amount. The $25,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the city; it's not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The City of Fairfield Utilities Department requires it as a condition of being licensed by the Utilities Director for water/sewer service work. No active bond, no license.
What does the bond guarantee? +
That your water/sewer service work meets the city's specs and stays sound through the maintenance period. If it fails and you do not correct it, the city can claim against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Is there a credit check? +
Yes — one soft credit pull, which never affects your score. It is the only extra step beyond the application, and it informs approval, not price. The rate is a flat 3% either way.
When does it renew? +
This bond renews on the city statutory date of 12/31. Terms run 1, 2, or 3 years — your choice at purchase. We send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses.
