About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Canton licenses electrical contractors through its Building Department and conditions that license on a $10,000 surety bond filed with the Chief Building Official. The bond is a City-and-public-protection guarantee standing behind your compliance with Canton's electrical code.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Canton (the obligee). The bond conditions you to save and keep the City harmless from loss or damage arising from your failure — or your employees' and agents' failure — to comply with the City's electrical chapter.

The bond stays in force for each period your Canton registration is active. Let it lapse and your license is no longer in good standing — so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out, keeping your $10,000 filing continuous.

Canton Codified Ordinances Ch. 1313The City of Canton, Ohio licenses electrical contractors under Chapter 1313 of its Codified Ordinances (Requirements for Electrical Contractor's License), which conditions the license on a $10,000 surety bond filed with and approved by the Chief Building Official, with the form approved by the City Law Director. Confirm your amount on the City's registration checklist.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Canton electrical contractor bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the $10,000 bond amount, the same for every contractor. Canton sets the $10,000, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the City if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The City of Canton requires it as a condition of an electrical contractor's license, filed with the Chief Building Official. No active bond, no license.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Fixed-amount municipal license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for each period your Canton registration is active. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
