About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Yonkers does not let anyone remove pavement or disturb the surface of a city street — to lay pipe, run conduit, place building materials, or for any purpose — until a permit is issued by the City Engineer. The bond is a performance and restoration guarantee in the amount of $50,000, guaranteeing proper repair of the opening and of any city underground facilities you damage.

It is a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Yonkers (the obligee). If you leave a defective patch, damage a city sewer or water line, or fail to restore the street, the city can recover its repair costs against the $50,000 bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays the city, you repay the surety. The bond must stay posted with DPW for the life of the permit, so contractors who restore the street properly treat it as a permit formality.

City of Yonkers Code, Ch. 103 (Streets & Sidewalks)The City of Yonkers prohibits removing pavement or disturbing a city street until the City Engineer issues a permit, and requires the permittee to furnish and keep posted with the Department of Public Works a $50,000 performance bond for the life of the permit guaranteeing proper repair of any damage to city underground facilities. The requirement sits in the Yonkers City Code street and excavation provisions (Chapter 103, Street Openings and Excavations); the penal sum and form are set by the city. Confirm your specific permit terms with the Yonkers Engineering Department / DPW.

You need this bond if you are

A utility or site contractor opening or excavating a Yonkers street
Laying pipe, conduit, or cable that crosses or runs under a city street
Pulling a Yonkers street opening permit that DPW conditions on a posted performance bond
Keeping a standing bond on file so you can pull openings throughout the year

Five minutes. The whole thing.

These are the actual issuing fields — no credit check section, because this bond doesn't have one.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Yonkers street opening bond? +
The premium is $1,500 — a flat 3% of the fixed $50,000 penal sum, the same for every contractor. The $50,000 amount is set by the city, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $50,000? +
No. You pay $1,500. The $50,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the City of Yonkers if you leave a defective opening — it is not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The City of Yonkers — the City Engineer issues the opening permit and the Department of Public Works keeps the $50,000 performance bond on file for the life of the permit.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Fixed-amount municipal permit bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond stays posted with DPW for the life of the permit. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so it never lapses over a missed email.
