About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

A career counseling service helps people find work — résumé help, job-search coaching, placement assistance. New Jersey regulates these firms under its employment-agency law and wants a financial backstop that you'll deal honestly with the clients who pay you in advance.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of New Jersey (the obligee), with your clients as the protected parties. If a firm misrepresents its services, keeps fees it shouldn't, or otherwise violates the law, a harmed client can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay active for the life of your registration, so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out to keep the $10,000 filing continuous.

N.J.S.A. 34:8-24 et seq. (Private Employment Agency Act)New Jersey regulates career counseling and employment services through the Division of Consumer Affairs under the Private Employment Agency Act (N.J.S.A. 34:8-24 et seq.) and its rules at N.J.A.C. 13:45B, which condition the license on a $10,000 surety bond. Confirm the bond amount and exact service classification on your Consumer Affairs application — send it to us and we'll check it.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the New Jersey career counseling bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the fixed $10,000 bond amount, the same for every firm. The $10,000 is set by the state, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond? +
License bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many firms finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
