About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

New Jersey regulates career consulting and outplacement firms under N.J.S.A. 34:8-65, part of the employment-services law administered by the Division of Consumer Affairs. Each firm must post a $10,000 bond at registration and annually thereafter — a consumer-protection guarantee behind the services you sell to job seekers and displaced workers.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of New Jersey (the obligee), with your clients as the protected parties. If a firm fails to deliver the services it contracted for, a harmed client can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The statute requires the bond at each annual registration and that it be retained until 90 days after the registration expires or is revoked; we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out so your filing stays continuous.

N.J.S.A. 34:8-65 (Career Consulting / Outplacement Firm registration)N.J.S.A. 34:8-65 requires a registered career consulting or outplacement organization to post a $10,000 bond with an authorized surety at initial registration with the Division of Consumer Affairs and annually thereafter; the bond is retained until 90 days after the registration expires or is revoked. Confirm the current bond amount and form on your registration.

You need this bond if you're

Registering a NJ career consulting firm — the bond is posted with your registration
Running an outplacement firm that contracts services to displaced employees
Renewing your annual registration and your bond is expiring or your surety non-renewed
Reinstating a lapsed registration that requires a fresh bond on file

Five minutes. The whole thing.

These are the actual issuing fields — no credit check section, because this bond doesn't have one.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the New Jersey career consulting / outplacement bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the fixed $10,000 bond amount, the same for every firm. The $10,000 is set by N.J.S.A. 34:8-65, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The Division of Consumer Affairs requires it under N.J.S.A. 34:8-65 as a condition of registering a career consulting or outplacement firm — posted at registration and annually thereafter.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount registration bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The statute requires a fresh bond at each annual registration, and it must be retained until 90 days after the registration expires or is revoked. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.
