What it is and who needs it.

What the document preparer bond guarantees

Nevada's NRS Chapter 240A requires a person who prepares legal documents for others — without being a licensed attorney directing the work — to register with the Secretary of State as a document preparation service and to file a cash or surety bond as a condition of registration.

The bond is a consumer-protection guarantee: it is conditioned that the registrant performs document-preparation duties faithfully and ethically, in compliance with Nevada law. A client harmed by a registrant's misconduct can recover against the bond, and a release of the surety does not erase claims for harm that occurred while the bond was in force.

The penal sum is tiered by who registers and how many registrants a business employs. This page is the $25,000 tier — a business entity employing one registrant. If your headcount puts you in a different tier, we issue the matching bond; send us the requirement and we'll confirm.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is this document preparer bond? +
The premium is $750 — a flat 3% of the $25,000 bond required for a business entity with one registrant. The amount is set by NRS Chapter 240A, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $25,000? +
No. You pay $750. The $25,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Which tier am I — individual, one registrant, or more? +
This page is the $25,000 tier for a business entity employing one registrant. The penal sum changes with the number of registrants a business employs, and an individual registrant files separately. If you're unsure which tier applies, send us your registration and we'll confirm.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active while your document-preparation registration is active. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available.
