About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Minnesota licenses water conditioning contractors — the businesses that install and service water softeners and treatment equipment — through the Department of Labor and Industry. As a condition of licensing, Minn. Stat. 326B.56 requires each contractor to give and maintain a $3,000 bond to the state.

The bond is conditioned on the faithful and lawful performance of all water conditioning installation or servicing done in the state, and is for the benefit of persons suffering injuries or damages from that work. It is written by a corporate surety licensed in Minnesota and filed with the commissioner.

A useful detail: once you hold this state bond, no political subdivision can require its own water conditioning bond. It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Minnesota water conditioning contractor bond? +
It is $275. A flat 3% of the $3,000 bond amount is $90, which is below our $275 minimum, so the price is $275 — the same for every contractor. The $3,000 amount is set by statute, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $3,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $3,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Does this replace local bond requirements? +
Yes. Under Minn. Stat. 326B.56, a contractor who maintains this state bond is not required to meet the bond requirements of any political subdivision. One state bond covers you statewide.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available.
