What the bond actually guarantees

Minnesota licenses electricians and electrical installers through the Department of Labor and Industry (DLI), Construction Codes and Licensing Division. As a condition of licensure, every Class A and Class B electric installer must give a $1,000 surety bond to the state — a separate, smaller filing than the $25,000 bond the statute requires of licensed electrical contractors.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Minnesota (the obligee), with the public as the protected party. The bond compensates the public for financial harm if the installer fails to comply with the licensing law governing electrical installations.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay active for the life of your installer license, so we track it and notify you before it lapses so your DLI filing stays continuous.

Minn. Stat. § 326B.33, subd. 6Minnesota Statutes § 326B.33, subdivision 6, requires every Class A and Class B electric installer, as a condition of licensure, to give bond to the state in the penal sum of $1,000. The bond must comply with section 326B.0921. A separate subdivision of the same statute sets a $25,000 bond for licensed electrical contractors — a different license, and a different bond, from the installer bond on this page.
