About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the school bond actually guarantees

No commercial driver training school may operate in Minnesota without a license from the Department of Public Safety, Driver and Vehicle Services. Under Minn. Stat. 171.34 and Minnesota Rules Chapter 7411, the license is conditioned on a continuous surety bond.

The bond is conditioned on the school faithfully performing all contracts and agreements with its students and complying with the driver-training statutes (Minn. Stat. 171.33–171.41) and rules. A student harmed by a breach can claim against the bond, up to its penal sum.

The required bond amount is tiered to the number of students enrolled the prior calendar year — this page covers the $30,000 tier, the highest standard tier. At this size we run one soft credit pull as part of underwriting; it informs approval, never the flat 3% price.

Minn. Stat. 171.34 (Minn. Rules ch. 7411)Minn. Stat. 171.34, with Minnesota Rules Chapter 7411, requires a commercial driver training school licensed by Driver and Vehicle Services to maintain a continuous surety bond conditioned on faithful performance of contracts with students and compliance with Minn. Stat. 171.33–171.41. The bond amount is tiered to prior-year enrollment. Confirm your required tier on your license application.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the $30,000 school bond? +
The premium is $900 — a flat 3% of the $30,000 bond amount. Same number for every school in this tier; the credit pull affects approval, not price.
Do I pay the $30,000? +
No. You pay $900. The $30,000 is the surety's maximum liability to harmed students — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How is the bond tier determined? +
Under Minn. Stat. 171.34 and Rules ch. 7411, the bond amount is tiered to the number of students enrolled the prior calendar year. The tiers we write are $10,000, $20,000, and $30,000 — confirm yours on your license application.
Is there a credit check? +
Yes — one soft credit pull at this tier, which never affects your score. It informs approval, not price. The rate is a flat 3% either way.
When does it renew? +
You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your school license never lapses over a missed email.
