About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the individual ROW bond actually guarantees

MDOT requires a permit before anyone works within the state trunkline right-of-way — and before it issues that permit, it requires a right-of-way permit bond on file. An individual bond covers a single permit and project.

It’s the right choice when you only have one project in the right-of-way and don’t expect to pull permits all year. (If you do expect several, a blanket bond covering a year of work under one instrument is usually simpler — we write that too.)

The bond guarantees you complete the permitted work to MDOT’s standards and restore the right-of-way. If you don’t, MDOT can recover the cost of repair or completion against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety. MDOT sets the amount for the project; we issue it at a flat 3% with no credit check.

MDOT right-of-way permitsThe Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) requires a right-of-way permit before work within the state trunkline right-of-way and conditions the permit on a surety bond being on file. An individual bond covers a single permit and project, sized by MDOT to that project. Confirm your required amount with the MDOT region or Transportation Service Center handling your permit.

You need this bond if you are

A contractor with one right-of-way permit rather than a year of permitted work
Doing a single utility, drive, or drainage project in the state trunkline right-of-way
A property owner or developer MDOT requires to bond a one-time access or connection
Bidding a single project that conditions the permit on a surety bond

Five minutes, issued on the spot.

Submit the application with the bond amount MDOT set — the executed bond is generated instantly, ready to put on file.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the MDOT individual right-of-way bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. MDOT sets the bond amount for the single project — enter that figure and the quote updates.
Individual or blanket — which do I need? +
An individual bond covers one permit and project; a blanket bond covers a year of permitted work under one instrument. If you only have one project, the individual bond is the fit. For several permits, ask us about the blanket bond.
Who sets the bond amount? +
MDOT, sized to your single right-of-way project. Confirm the figure with the MDOT region or Transportation Service Center handling your permit, and we’ll issue at that amount.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the ROW bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
What does the bond protect against? +
It guarantees you complete the permitted work to MDOT’s standards and restore the right-of-way. If you don’t, MDOT can recover repair or completion costs against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
