About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the sport license agent bond covers

Maryland's Department of Natural Resources sells hunting and fishing licenses partly through authorized sport license agents — the sporting-goods stores, marinas, and other retailers that issue licenses to the public. An agent collects license fees that belong to the State, and DNR requires a $5,000 bond to back that money.

The bond is a fidelity-style guarantee: it ensures the agent accounts for and pays over the license fees it collects, and follows the rules DNR sets for issuing licenses. It runs to the State for the benefit of the public — not to the agent.

If an agent fails to remit the fees it collects or otherwise breaches its duties, the State can recover against the bond, and if the surety pays, the agent repays the surety. The bond stays active for as long as you hold your DNR agent authorization. We issue the $5,000 bond at our $275 minimum, with no credit check.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Maryland sport license agent bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. The bond amount is a fixed $5,000, and 3% of $5,000 is $150, which is below the minimum, so $275 applies. Same for every agent.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
What does the bond guarantee? +
That you account for and pay over the license fees you collect for the State, and follow DNR rules for issuing licenses. If you fail to remit and the State is harmed, it can claim against the bond; if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount agent bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold your DNR agent authorization. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available.
