In Maryland, only haulers with a Special Medical Waste Hauler permit from the Department of the Environment may legally transport medical waste, and the permit is conditioned on a surety bond. The bond is an environmental-cleanup guarantee: it indemnifies the State for the abatement of pollution from an improper transport or spill of medical waste.
It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Maryland (the obligee). If a hauler spills or mishandles regulated medical waste and the State has to abate it, the State can recover the cleanup cost against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
One note on the amount: the State's special medical waste regulations have referenced a higher minimum bond for some hauler categories. This application is set at $10,000 — confirm with the MDE that $10,000 is the figure for your permit before you file, and if your category calls for a larger bond, send us the requirement and we'll issue it at the same flat 3%.
These are the actual issuing fields — no credit check section, because this bond doesn't have one.
