MD hauling performance bonds.
Flat 3%. Enter your amount.

When you haul an oversize or overweight load on Maryland roads, the State Highway Administration can require a performance bond before issuing the permit — so the State is covered for any road damage the move causes. SHA sets the amount; we issue it at a flat 3% with no credit check.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the hauling performance bond covers

Maryland's State Highway Administration issues special permits for vehicles and loads that exceed legal size or weight limits. Because an oversize or overweight move can damage roads, bridges, and structures, SHA can require a performance bond before issuing the permit.

The bond is a damage-assurance guarantee: it assures the State that if your move damages any road, the State will be compensated for the repair. SHA's Motor Carrier Division keeps the bond on file for a minimum of one year from the move, because heavy-haul damage isn't always immediate.

If your move causes road damage the State has to repair, SHA can recover against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety. It's not insurance for you; it's the State's backstop for the wear and tear a heavy haul puts on public infrastructure. Enter the amount SHA required and we issue at a flat 3% with no credit check.

COMAR 11.04.03 (State Highway Administration)Maryland's State Highway Administration, under COMAR 11.04.03 (oversize/overweight hauling permits), may require a performance bond before issuing a special hauling permit for excessive size or weight. The SHA Motor Carrier Division keeps the bond on file for at least one year from the date of the move; the bond assures the State of compensation for road damage. SHA sets the amount — confirm it on your permit requirement.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Maryland hauling performance bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, $275 minimum. The amount itself is set by the SHA Hauling Permits Unit for your move or permit account. Enter that figure and the quote updates.
Why does SHA require it? +
An oversize or overweight move can damage roads and bridges. The bond assures the State it will be compensated for that damage — SHA keeps it on file for at least a year from the move.
