What the turnpike toll bond actually covers

The Maine Turnpike Authority runs the E-ZPass program on the Maine Turnpike. Most personal accounts are prepaid — you load a balance and tolls draw it down. Larger business and fleet customers can instead run a postpaid account, where tolls accrue and are billed afterward, like a credit line for tolls.

Because the Authority is extending that credit, its E-ZPass business account terms require a postpaid account to post a surety bond equal to about two months of estimated toll and non-toll charges, with a minimum acceptable bond of $5,000. The bond stands behind the tolls your fleet runs up before you pay them.

It is a three-party guarantee, not insurance for you: if your account goes unpaid, the Authority can recover against the bond, and if the surety pays, you repay the surety. The Authority releases the bond once the postpaid account is paid in full and closed. We issue the amount the Authority set, at a flat 3% with no credit check.

The bond is released once postpaid balances are paid in full. Confirm your required amount with the Authority’s commercial accounts office.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Maine turnpike toll bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. The amount itself is set by the Maine Turnpike Authority — generally about two months of your estimated toll and non-toll charges, with a $5,000 minimum. Enter your figure and the quote updates.
Who has to post this bond? +
Business E-ZPass accounts on a postpaid plan — where tolls are billed after use instead of drawn from a prepaid balance. Prepaid personal accounts don’t need a bond. If you’re not sure which you have, the Authority’s commercial accounts office can confirm.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the turnpike toll bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
Can I get the bond released? +
Yes. The Maine Turnpike Authority releases the bond once your postpaid balances are paid in full and the account is closed. Until then it must stay active to keep the postpaid account open.
What amount should I enter? +
Use the figure the Authority gave you — roughly two months of your estimated toll and non-toll charges, never below $5,000. If you don’t have it yet, start at the $5,000 minimum and send us the Authority’s notice; we’ll re-issue if it differs.
