Flat 3%. Enter your amount.

Moving a load that exceeds legal size or weight on a Louisiana highway takes a DOTD special permit — and DOTD can condition it on a bond that you will follow the permit and protect the road. It is governed by La. R.S. 32:387. We issue it at a flat 3% with no credit check on this bond.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the oversize/overweight bond actually covers

Louisiana caps the legal size and weight of loads on its highways, and DOTD issues special permits to move anything bigger or heavier under La. R.S. 32:380 et seq. and the special-permit provisions of La. R.S. 32:387. The bond is the security DOTD can require alongside the permit.

It guarantees you operate within the permit terms — the approved route, escorts, time-of-day limits — and stand behind any damage to the highway, bridges, or structures from an oversize or overweight move. It protects the state and the traveling public, not the hauler.

It is not insurance for you — if DOTD recovers permit-related damage or fees against the bond, you repay the surety. DOTD sets the amount, with a statutory floor of $1,000; enter that figure and we issue at a flat 3% with no credit check. The separate monthly permit-fee account bond is a different filing, and we write that one too.

La. R.S. 32:387 (special permits)La. R.S. 32:387 authorizes DOTD to issue special permits for the movement of vehicles of excess dimensions or weight and to require a surety bond as a condition of the permit. The minimum bond is generally $1,000, with DOTD sizing the amount to the move — confirm the figure on your DOTD permit.

You need this bond if you are

A heavy-haul or oversize carrier moving excess-dimension or excess-weight loads in Louisiana
A crane, rig, or equipment mover running DOTD special permits
A permit service pulling oversize/overweight permits for client moves
An out-of-state hauler DOTD asked to bond a Louisiana permit

Five minutes, issued on the spot.

Submit the application with the bond amount DOTD set — the executed bond is generated instantly. Sign it as the principal, then file it with DOTD.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Louisiana oversize/overweight permit bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. DOTD sets the bond amount, sized to the move, with a statutory floor of $1,000. Enter your figure and the quote updates.
Is this the same as the special permit fees bond? +
They are related but separate. This bond backs an oversize/overweight move under your DOTD permit. The special-permit fees bond secures the monthly permit fees you run on account. We issue both — tell us which your DOTD notice asks for.
Is there a credit check? +
No — this bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
Do I need to sign the original? +
Yes. DOTD generally wants the signed original bond, so the executed bond must be signed by the principal (the bond applicant) before it is filed. We mail the original to the address you provide.
Where do I file it? +
With the Louisiana DOTD permit office handling your special permit. We issue the executed bond ready to sign and submit.
