What the fuel tax bond actually covers

Louisiana taxes motor fuel at the supplier and distributor level, and the Department of Revenue conditions a fuel-tax license on a surety bond under R.S. 47:818.40. The bond stands behind the gasoline and diesel tax you collect and owe — if you fail to remit, the state can recover against it.

The required amount depends on your role and your tax volume. For a blender, the statute sets the bond at the greater of $20,000 or an amount equal to three months of tax liability. Suppliers, distributors, and importers have their own minimums, and the secretary can require more based on volume.

Failure to file the bond the secretary requires is itself grounds for license revocation. Whatever amount applies to your license, we issue the bond at a flat 3% with no credit check — same honest pricing as every bond we write.

R.S. 47:818.40 (Department of Revenue)Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:818.40 sets the bond requirements and amounts for motor-fuel suppliers, distributors, blenders, importers, and terminal operators. For a blender, the bond is the greater of $20,000 or an amount equal to three months' tax liability; other license types carry their own minimums, with the secretary able to require more based on volume. Confirm your required amount with the Department of Revenue.
