Iowa's money transmission license under the Uniform Money Transmission Modernization Act, Iowa Code chapter 533C, requires security before the license issues — a surety bond of the greater of $100,000 or 100% of your average daily money transmission liability in Iowa, capped at $500,000, under 533C.802. The bond files through NMLS with the Division of Banking. The premium is 1% of the bond amount, $100 minimum, the bond issues the moment you pay, and any credit screen is a soft pull only — it never affects your score.

What the money services bond covers

Iowa licenses money transmission — sending money, issuing and selling payment instruments, and related money services — through the Division of Banking under the Uniform Money Transmission Modernization Act, Iowa Code chapter 533C. Under section 533C.802, an applicant provides and a licensee at all times maintains a surety bond of the greater of $100,000 or 100% of its average daily money transmission liability in Iowa for the most recently completed three-month period, up to a maximum of $500,000.

The bond is one of chapter 533C's prudential standards — alongside net worth and permissible-investment requirements — and it secures your money transmission obligations to the Iowa customers whose funds you move. A licensee holding the $500,000 maximum does not have to keep calculating its average daily liability. The bond files electronically through NMLS against your company record.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The security must stay in place at all times during licensure, so the bond stays continuously on file; we track the term and send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.

Iowa Code § 533C.802Section 533C.802 of the Iowa Code — part of the Uniform Money Transmission Modernization Act — requires a money transmission license applicant to provide, and a licensee at all times to maintain, a surety bond in a form satisfactory to the superintendent. The amount is the greater of $100,000 or 100% of the licensee's average daily money transmission liability in Iowa for the most recently completed three-month period, up to a maximum of $500,000. Confirm your exact required amount on your NMLS license checklist.
