About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the school bond actually covers

Indiana licenses cosmetology (beauty culture) schools under IC 25-8, through the Professional Licensing Agency and the Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners. Because students often pay tuition up front for a full course, the state wants a bond standing behind that money if the school closes or fails to deliver the training it promised.

The bond is a student-protection guarantee: if a school breaches its enrollment contracts or shuts down mid-course, affected students can recover prepaid tuition against the bond. It is a three-party arrangement — the school (the principal), the surety, and the State of Indiana for the benefit of students.

It is not insurance for the school — if the surety pays students on a valid claim, the school repays the surety. Schools that finish what they enroll students for treat the bond as a license formality. Enter the amount your license requires and we issue it at a flat 3% with no credit check.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Indiana cosmetology school bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum, so a $2,500 or $5,000 bond lands at the $275 minimum and the premium scales up from there. The amount itself is set for your school license — confirm it with the Professional Licensing Agency and enter that figure.
Why does Indiana require it? +
Students pay tuition up front for a full cosmetology course. The bond protects that prepaid tuition: if a licensed school closes or breaches its enrollment contracts, affected students can recover against the bond.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the school bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
Does this cover an individual cosmetologist? +
No — this is the bond for a licensed cosmetology / beauty-culture school, not for an individual cosmetologist or a salon. It protects students of the school. If you need a different license bond, send us the requirement.
What amount should I choose? +
Use the figure the Professional Licensing Agency requires for your school license. If you are unsure, send us your license requirement and we will confirm the amount before you pay.
