What the contractor registration bond actually covers
The Village of Wheeling defines a contractor broadly — any person, firm, or corporation engaged in the construction, repair, or alteration of a building, structure, accessory object, site, or street or sidewalk pavement in the Village, including trades from asphalt and carpentry to electrical, excavating, HVAC, masonry, plumbing, roofing, and wrecking. Subcontractors count as contractors, and homeowners repairing their own home are exempt.
No contractor may undertake permitted work in the Village without first registering with the Community Development Department. Registration requires the business name, type of contracting activity, address, evidence of any state-mandated license, and — the piece this bond satisfies — evidence of a surety bond in the amount of $10,000, issued by a surety the Village approves and authorized to do business in Illinois.
