About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the testing station bond actually covers

Illinois requires certain vehicles — primarily commercial and second-division vehicles — to pass a safety inspection under the Vehicle Inspection Law in Chapter 13 of the Illinois Vehicle Code (625 ILCS 5). Those inspections are done at Official Testing Stations permitted by the Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety.

A permitted station files a $1,000 surety bond standing behind its duties as an official inspector — that it conducts inspections honestly and follows the Department’s rules. If a station issues false inspection results or otherwise breaches its duties, the bond backs the resulting harm.

It is not insurance for the station — if the surety pays a claim, the station repays the surety. At 3% of $1,000 the premium is just $30, so we price it at our $275 minimum and skip the credit check entirely. Confirm your exact requirement on your IDOT testing-station paperwork.

625 ILCS 5, Ch. 13 (Vehicle Inspection Law)Official Testing Stations conduct vehicle safety inspections under Chapter 13 of the Illinois Vehicle Code (625 ILCS 5) and Department of Transportation rules (Ill. Admin. Code tit. 92, Part 451). The station files a $1,000 surety bond with the IDOT Division of Traffic Safety standing behind its duties as an official inspector — confirm the amount on your testing-station paperwork.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Illinois official testing station bond? +
The bond amount is a fixed $1,000. At our flat 3% rate that is $30 — below our $275 minimum premium — so the price is $275 flat per term, the same for every station.
Why is it $275 if the bond is only $1,000? +
$275 is our minimum premium on any bond. 3% of a $1,000 bond is only $30, far below the cost of underwriting, issuing, and filing — so small fixed bonds like this land at the $275 floor. We would rather tell you that plainly.
Is there a credit check? +
No — this bond has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount bonds like this one do not need one.
Who requires this bond? +
The Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety, as a condition of an Official Testing Station permit to conduct vehicle safety inspections under Chapter 13 of the Vehicle Code.
When does it renew? +
You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your permit never lapses over a missed email.
