IL mileage tax bonds.
$275 flat. Per vehicle.

When an Illinois second-division vehicle runs on mileage weight tax (mileage plates) under Section 3-818 of the Vehicle Code, the Secretary of State requires a $500 bond per vehicle. At 3% that is $15 — below our $275 minimum — so the price is $275 flat, with no credit check.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the mileage tax bond actually covers

Illinois lets the owner of a second-division vehicle elect to pay a mileage weight tax in lieu of the flat weight tax under Section 3-818 of the Illinois Vehicle Code — the “mileage plate.” It keeps registration cost down for vehicles that run limited miles inside Illinois, with a guaranteed minimum mileage tax paid up front.

Because the tax is mileage-based and reconciled later, the Secretary of State requires a $500 surety bond per vehicle standing behind the mileage tax owed. If the owner exceeds the guaranteed mileage and does not pay the additional tax, the state can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays, you repay the surety. Owners who track their miles and settle their tax treat the bond as a registration formality. At 3% of $500 the premium is just $15, so we price it at our $275 minimum and skip the credit check entirely.

625 ILCS 5/3-818 (Illinois Vehicle Code)Section 3-818 of the Illinois Vehicle Code lets the owner of a second-division vehicle elect to pay a mileage weight tax in lieu of the flat weight tax under Section 3-815, paying a guaranteed minimum mileage tax up front. The Secretary of State requires a $500 surety bond per vehicle standing behind the mileage tax; vehicles on mileage plates cannot be operated outside Illinois.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Illinois mileage tax bond? +
The bond amount is a fixed $500 per vehicle. At our flat 3% rate that is $15 — below our $275 minimum premium — so the price is $275 flat per term. The same number for every owner.
Why is it $275 if the bond is only $500? +
$275 is our minimum premium on any bond. 3% of a $500 bond is only $15, far below the cost of underwriting, issuing, and filing — so small fixed bonds like this land at the $275 floor. We would rather tell you that plainly than pretend the math comes out higher.
Is there a credit check? +
No — this bond has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount bonds like this one do not need one.
Do I need one bond per vehicle? +
The standard mileage-tax bond is $500 per vehicle, which is why the application collects the vehicle’s make, body, year, and factory/engine numbers. If you are registering several vehicles, see our Mileage Tax — Schedule bond, which is sized for a fleet.
When does it renew? +
Mileage-plate bonds follow statutory renewal dates (often June 30). You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out so your registration never lapses over a missed email.
