Lemont, a Cook and DuPage County village along the Des Plaines River and the I&M Canal, does not rely on a statewide general contractor license — it conditions its own permit and licensing process on a contractor first posting a $25,000 surety bond with the Building Department. A contractor may not perform work in the Village without a valid license, and the bond is a precondition to that license.
It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the Village of Lemont (the obligee), with property owners and the Village as the protected parties. If a licensed contractor's work causes damage or falls short of code, a harmed party can recover against the bond up to the $25,000 penal sum.
It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Lemont waives its $100 license fee for electrical, plumbing, irrigation, fire alarm, and fire sprinkler trades, but the bond and liability-insurance requirements still apply across trades — confirm your specific trade's requirements with the Building Department before you file.
