About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

IBEW Local 134 — the electrical workers' local covering the City of Chicago — requires signatory contractors to post a bond backing their obligation to pay agreed union wages under the Local's collective bargaining agreement (CBA). For employers with 1 to 5 employees, the wage bond amount is set at $50,000, separate from the Local's fringe-benefit bond.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and Local 134 (the obligee), protecting the union electricians whose paychecks depend on the CBA being honored. If a signatory contractor falls behind on wages the CBA requires, the union or an affected worker can make a claim against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay in force for as long as you remain a signatory employer, so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out to keep your $50,000 filing continuous.

IBEW Local 134 collective bargaining agreementThis bond is not required by an Illinois statute — it is a condition of the collective bargaining agreement between IBEW Local Union No. 134 and its signatory electrical contractors in Chicago. The Local sets the wage bond amount by employee-count tier; contractors with 1 to 5 employees file $50,000, and larger tiers carry higher amounts. Confirm the tier that matches your workforce — we'll issue whichever applies.

Renewing your wage bond and your current filing is expiring or non-renewing
Growing past your current employee tier and Local 134 requires a higher bond amount
Reinstating a lapsed bond filing after a gap in signatory status

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the IBEW Local 134 employer wage bond? The premium is $2,000 flat — set by our carrier's rate book for this bond at the 1-to-5-employee tier. The $50,000 bond amount is set by the Local 134 collective bargaining agreement, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $50,000?No. You pay $2,000. The $50,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond?Bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many contractors finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? The application includes a credit consent, but it authorizes a soft pull only — a soft inquiry that won't affect your score. No hard inquiry ever runs on this bond.
How is this different from the fringe benefits bond?Local 134 splits the requirement into two bonds: this one guarantees wage payments, and a separate $70,000 fringe-benefits bond covers pension, health, and training-fund contributions. Most signatory contractors need both.
