What the blanket bond actually covers

The Illinois Department of Transportation requires a bond on access permits that serve commercial property, in an amount and for a period the Department specifies. For a contractor or developer who pulls many access permits, bonding each one separately is a hassle — so IDOT lets you post a single blanket bond in lieu of individual bonds.

The blanket bond guarantees that the work performed under each access permit it covers is completed to IDOT's standards and the right-of-way is restored. It rides under your permits the same way an individual bond would, but covers all of them at once.

Because IDOT sizes the bond to your activity, there is no single statutory figure. The blanket bond must stay active until five years after the last permit issued against it — we track it for you. Enter the amount the Department specified and we issue it at a flat 3% with no credit check.

92 Ill. Adm. Code 550 (IDOT highway permits)Under IDOT's highway permit rules (92 Ill. Adm. Code 550), a bond in an amount and period the Department specifies becomes part of an access permit serving commercial property; in lieu of individual bonds, IDOT will accept a blanket bond as specified by the Department, which must remain active until five years after the last permit issued against it. Confirm your amount with your IDOT district.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Illinois highway access blanket bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. IDOT specifies the bond amount based on your activity, so there is no single statutory figure — enter the amount your district set and the quote updates.
How is a blanket bond different from an individual permit bond? +
A blanket bond covers all of your IDOT access permits under one bond, instead of posting a separate bond for each job. IDOT accepts it in lieu of individual bonds when you pull permits regularly.
How long does the blanket bond stay in force? +
IDOT keeps a blanket bond active until five years after the last permit issued against it, so it covers the warranty tail on every job it backed. We send renewal notices so it never lapses.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the blanket bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
Where do I file it? +
With your IDOT district office, which typically asks for three copies of the bond. We issue the executed bond ready to submit.
