Darien's Municipal Code, § 4-1-14-2 (General Requirements), lets a general contractor post a single $20,000 license bond in lieu of separate $10,000 bonds on each of its subcontractors, provided plumbers, roofers, lawn sprinkler installers, and fire alarm contractors are not among them — those trades bond separately.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Darien (the obligee), with the City and harmed parties as the protected interest. Darien's Community Development Department administers the license and lists the City as certificate holder on the accompanying liability insurance.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Darien's contractor license year runs May 1 to April 30, so we track your term and notify you 60 and 30 days out to keep the filing continuous.
