What the bond actually guarantees
Darien's Municipal Code, § 4-1-14-2 (General Requirements), sets contractor license bonding by trade: contractors other than plumbers, roofers, lawn sprinkler installers, and fire alarm contractors post a $10,000 license bond covering their own business's licensed work. A general contractor may instead post a $20,000 bond that also covers its subcontractors — we write that version too.
It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Darien (the obligee), with the City and harmed parties as the protected interest. Darien's Community Development Department administers contractor registration and lists the City as certificate holder on the accompanying liability insurance.
It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Darien's contractor license year runs May 1 to April 30, so we track your term and notify you 60 and 30 days out to keep the filing continuous.
